CCA Announces New Contracts With Kansas And Wyoming

December 10, 2001
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Dec 10, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Corrections Corporation of America (NYSE: CXW) announced that it has entered into separate contracts with the State of Kansas and the State of Wyoming, according to CCA officials.

Adult male offenders from both Kansas and Wyoming were placed in CCA's medium-security Kit Carson Correctional Center in Burlington, Colorado, within the last week. Both contracts allow for CCA to manage up to 100 inmates initially.

The Kansas contract represents the first relationship CCA has had in offering services to that state. Additionally, it represents the first time that the State of Kansas has sent inmates out of state. CCA has provided services to Wyoming, but not for a number of years.

"We are extremely pleased with the opportunity to establish these new partnerships with the States of Kansas and Wyoming in an effort to meet their immediate correctional needs," said John Ferguson, President and Chief Executive Officer. "The signing of these new state government contracts reflects well on CCA's reputation for quality correctional services and our ability to respond quickly to existing government needs. CCA is grateful for the opportunity to earn the trust of these new customers and to provide a meaningful public service to the citizens of these two states."

Kit Carson Correctional Center is privately owned by CCA and serves the needs of the State of Colorado. The facility, which opened in November 1998, is accredited by the American Correctional Association and has a total capacity of 768 inmates. A wide array of education, vocation, substance abuse and life skills courses are offered to offenders as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program aimed at enhancing their opportunities for a successful re-entry into society.

CCA is the nation's largest provider of outsourced corrections management services, housing an inmate population larger than that of all but five public correctional systems in the United States. The Company specializes in owning, operating and managing prisons and other correctional facilities and providing inmate residential and prisoner transportation services for governmental agencies. In addition to providing the fundamental residential services relating to inmates, each of the Company's facilities offers a variety of rehabilitation and educational programs, including basic education, life skills and employment training and substance abuse treatment. CCA also provides health care (including medical, dental and psychiatric services), institutional food services and work and recreational programs. The Company owns or manages 70 facilities including 68 correctional and detention facilities with a total design capacity of approximately 65,000 beds in 21 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, of which 68 facilities are operating (two of which are idle) and two are under construction.
